The Quiet Battle

Before Everything Changes

Everyone talks about the breakthrough...

The fresh start, the new beginning, the answered prayer or the freedom that comes after finally letting go, but almost no one talks about the battle that happens just before.

This is the quiet war inside your own heart and the season where you already know what God is asking of you.

You have prayed, wrestled with your thoughts, asked for signs and somehow God has faithfully given them.

The doors have closed and your peace has shifted. Conviction has become impossible to ignore.

Deep down...

You already know this chapter is ending. Yet, somehow you still can't bring yourself to walk away. Something inside you is still holding on.

This is the part no one talks about. The constant tug and pull between two versions of yourself.

One foot standing in the life you've always known and the other reaching toward the life God is calling you into.

Some mornings you wake up completely certain and you know exactly what you need to do. It is as if you can almost see the life waiting on the other side of obedience.

Then, without warning, doubt creeps back in. This is when you begin questioning everything.

"What if I've got it wrong?"

"What if I regret leaving?"

"What if this isn't really God?"

Yesterday you were ready to leap. Today you're wondering if you imagined the whole thing.
It's exhausting, because your heart keeps pulling you back toward what your spirit has already outgrown.

I think that's why the image of leaving the devil in the water resonates so deeply with me. (Hailey Hutchenson - Devil in The Water).

The water itself changes everything, because of the decision it represents.
It's that moment where you stand face to face with who you've been and who God is inviting you to become.

It's choosing to bury the shame you've carried, the fear you've lived with, the habits that have kept you bound and the identity you've been clinging to, because they no longer belong to the person you're becoming.

The hardest part isn't stepping into the water. The hardest part is knowing you can't walk back out carrying the same things.

Somewhere in that moment, you realise you can't follow Jesus while dragging your old chains behind you.

Eventually...

You have to leave the devil in the water.

I've realised that sometimes we mistake hesitation for disobedience, but I don't always think it is.
Sometimes it's grief, because even unhealthy things become familiar, whether it be a relationship, a career, a habit, a dream or a version of yourself.

Even the pain you've carried for years can begin to feel like home and when home is all you've ever known... leaving feels terrifying.

Fear of the unknown.

God has a way of preparing our hearts long before He changes our circumstances.

He whispers before He moves, He convicts before He redirects and He loosens our grip before asking us to let go completely.

Transformation isn't just about changing where we are, it's about changing who we are.

Maybe that's why this season feels so uncomfortable. You're no longer the person you were, but you're not yet living as the person you're becoming.

It's the in-between...

The place where your old identity keeps calling your name, but your new identity is quietly waiting for you to say yes.

If this is where you find yourself today...

Don't be discouraged, because you're struggling.
Don't assume you've failed, because your emotions haven't caught up yet.

Sometimes obedience comes before confidence, courage comes before peace and faith means taking the next step while your heart is still trembling.

One day you'll look back and realise this wasn't the season that broke you.
It was the season that asked you one question.

Who are you going to become?

The answer wasn't found in certainty.

It was found in surrender and when the time finally came... you left behind the life that could no longer hold you.

It wasn't easy and it hurt so deeply, but because you knew that if you wanted everything God had prepared for you...

You couldn't keep carrying everything He asked you to leave behind.

Some things are only meant to go as far as the water's edge and maybe that's the invitation today.

You don't have to have the answer nor feel completely ready, but just trust God enough to leave the devil in the water... and walk into the life He has already prepared for you.

With you on the journey,
