The Cost of Authenticity

When Your Authenticity Creates Discomfort

There comes a moment in life when you realise that you can no longer shrink yourself just to make other people comfortable.

So you begin to speak honestly, you stop pretending, you set boundaries and you honour what God has placed inside of you.

You show up as your whole self — not the version of you that has been carefully edited to fit into someone else's expectations.

However sometimes, your authenticity makes people uncomfortable.

That discomfort can leave you questioning yourself.

Am I too much?

Did I say something wrong?

Should I have handled it differently?

Maybe I should just keep quiet.

Perhaps the discomfort isn't always a sign that something is wrong with you. Sometimes it is simply revealing that something has changed — within you, around you or in the space you're standing in.

Just remember this: You were never created to fit everywhere.

We spend so much of our lives trying to belong.

We adjust our personalities, silence our opinions and hide our struggles. We downplay our gifts and we make ourselves smaller, because we are afraid that being fully seen might cost us relationships.

God didn't create you to spend your life performing a version of yourself that makes everyone else comfortable.

There truly is such freedom in authenticity.

When you know who you are and whose you are, you no longer need everyone's approval to validate your existence.

Perhaps when you finally stop pretending, the people or environments that benefited from the old version of you may not know what to do with the real you...

That's okay.

Discomfort can be a form of discernment.

Not every uncomfortable situation means "God is telling me to leave." Sometimes God uses uncomfortable situations to grow us, humble us, teach us or reveal something within us that still needs healing.

However, there are also moments when discomfort becomes confirmation:

When you continually have to betray your values to belong...

When being honest is constantly punished...

When your boundaries are treated as rejection...

When your growth threatens people who were comfortable with your old version...

When you feel yourself becoming someone you don't recognise just to maintain a connection...

Maybe it is time to pause and ask God:

"Is this where You are still calling me to be?"

Sometimes the answer isn't try harder. Sometimes the answer is to move differently and eventually, the answer will be to move on.

You don't have to dim your light.

Jesus said:

"No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house." — Matthew 5:15 (NLT)

Your authenticity is not something you need to apologise for. There is no shame in the healing that changed you and no reason to hide the person you are becoming.

Growth does not require an explanation to everyone who watches it unfold.
Boundaries are not cruelty. Softness is not weakness. Strength is not intimidation and most importantly, the calling God has placed on your life will not always make sense to those who were never called to walk the journey with you.

There will be people who celebrate the version of you that needed them, but become uncomfortable with the version of you who has learned to stand on her own.

Don't allow their discomfort to convince you that your growth is wrong.

God knows where you belong.

Sometimes we desperately try to hold onto places, relationships and seasons because we are afraid of what comes next.

However, God may be preparing to move you into something that requires you to release what no longer fits.

A seed is never meant to remain a seed forever. There are seasons when God asks us to be planted, seasons when He asks us to grow and seasons when He asks us to release what once felt familiar.

The challenge is learning to recognise the difference.

So pray. Listen. Pay attention to the fruit. Pay attention to how your spirit responds and to what God is revealing, not simply to what you are feeling.
Most importantly, don't confuse being uncomfortable with being disobedient.

Obedience isn't always comfortable. Sometimes God allows discomfort to get our attention, redirect our steps or reveal what we have been unwilling to see.

Maybe you aren't "too much". Maybe you're simply becoming more of who God created you to be.

Maybe it is an invitation to ask:

"Lord, where do You want me now?"

Just remember the right people won't require you to abandon yourself to belong.
The right environment won't demand that you silence the very voice God gave you and the right season won't require you to become someone else.

Keep becoming. Keep healing. Keep growing.

When your authenticity creates discomfort, remember that not every uncomfortable place is a place you need to leave — but not every place you're uncomfortable in is a place you're meant to stay.

God is using the discomfort to grow you and sometimes, after you've learned what He needed you to learn, He gently whispers,

"My child, this isn't where I planted you."

So when God moves you, trust Him enough to go.

With you on the journey,
