Sustenance

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus, Even in the Storm 🌊🙏

There are moments in life when the storms become so overwhelming that, just like Simon Peter, we start to sink.

Today, I found myself rewatching The Chosen, Season 3, Episode 8, “Sustenance.”
It is the episode where Simon Peter steps out of the boat and walks on water toward Jesus. However, when he takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the wind and the waves, fear takes over and he begins to drown.

I have watched this episode before, but today, I needed to watch it again.

I needed the reminder.

Lately, life has brought its fair share of difficult seasons, uncertainty, emotional battles and moments when the weight of everything feels a little too heavy. Sometimes, even when we believe in God, we find ourselves asking questions. We worry about the future, the people we love and the things we cannot control.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, we begin to focus more on the storm than on the One who can carry us through it.

Isn't that what happens to us, too?

We start with faith. We trust God. We believe He is working, even when we cannot see it. Nonetheless,  the waves get bigger, the answers don't come as quickly as we hoped and fear begins to whisper louder than faith.

Just like Peter, we begin to sink.

There is something beautiful about this scene: Peter didn't have to save himself.
He simply cried out, "Lord, save me!" and Jesus immediately reached out His hand.

Matthew 14:30–31 (NLT) tells us that when Peter saw the strong wind, he became frightened and began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him.

Immediately.

Jesus reached for him right there, in the middle of his fear not only after Peter had proven his faith or stopped being afraid, but immediately.

That is the reminder I needed most today.

I can know the truth, believe in God's promises and still have moments when the waves seem to demand more of my attention than His voice. Faith is not about never losing our focus, but about being willing to turn our eyes back to Jesus whenever we realise we have.

God doesn't expect me to pretend that the storms aren't real. He doesn't ask me to deny that I am tired, worried or hurting. He reminds me to keep turning my eyes back to Him, even when everything around me feels uncertain.

Rewatching this episode reminded me that faith doesn't mean we will never feel afraid.
It means that when fear comes, we can choose to reach for Jesus again.

When I don't have the answers, I can still pray.

When I cannot see what tomorrow holds, I can still trust.

When my heart feels heavy, I can still place my burdens in God's hands.

Even when I feel myself sinking beneath the weight of life's circumstances, I can remember that I am not beyond the reach of His hand.

I don't know what storms you might be facing today and I certainly don't have all the answers to my own, but I know this: I don't want my circumstances to become bigger in my eyes than my God.

Today, I am choosing to look up again, because the One who walks on water is still with me in the storm.

So, if I lose my focus along the way, I will remind myself to do what Peter did and cry out to Jesus, for even when my faith feels small, His faithfulness remains.

A little reminder for your heart today: Keep your eyes on God, because the waves have never been greater than the One who holds you.

“For we live by believing and not by seeing.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NLT)

With faith, hope and a little reminder to keep looking up,
