Take Another Shot

Life Is Like a Camera

"Focus on the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don't work out... take another shot."

It's a simple quote, but it holds a powerful lesson.

Most of us spend far too much time zooming in on what went wrong.
We replay conversations, relive mistakes and magnify disappointments until they become the only thing we can see. Before long, we begin to believe that one bad chapter defines the whole story.

However, cameras don't work that way.
A good photographer knows where to focus.

The lens can point toward beauty or toward brokenness. While we can't always choose what happens to us, we can choose what we continue looking at. Focusing on the good doesn't mean pretending life is perfect or ignoring pain. It means refusing to let the difficult moments become the only moments that shape our perspective.

Then there's the second part: develop from the negatives.

In traditional photography, negatives were never the finished product. They were simply part of the process that produced the final picture.

Life works much the same way.

Our failures, heartbreaks, disappointments and seasons of waiting don't have to become permanent labels. They can become places of growth. Some of the strongest, wisest, most compassionate people you'll ever meet are people who allowed their hardest seasons to develop something beautiful within them.

Your pain may have taught you resilience.
Your loss may have deepened your compassion.
Your waiting may have strengthened your faith.

The negative wasn't the end of the story — it was part of the development process.

Then finally...

"If things don't work out... take another shot."

How often do we give up after one rejection?

One failed business.
One difficult relationship.
One unanswered prayer.
One mistake.
One dream that didn't unfold the way we expected.

As a coach, I've seen so many people convince themselves they're out of chances when, in reality, they're simply between attempts.

Failure isn't final.
It is feedback.

Sometimes God closes one door because another one is waiting. Sometimes we need more experience, more healing or simply more time before we're ready for what's ahead.

Every new day is another opportunity to try again.

Another chance to love.
Another chance to forgive.
Another chance to start over.
Another chance to become the person you're growing into.

So today, ask yourself:

What am I focusing on?

What negative experience could become a lesson instead of a limitation?

Where is life inviting me to take another shot?

For your story isn't over.
The next chapter may become your favourite one yet.

Reflection

You don't need a perfect past to create a beautiful future. The most meaningful lives aren't built by people who never failed — they're built by people who kept adjusting the focus, kept learning and kept showing up after life knocked them down.

Keep your eyes on what matters. Let your struggles shape you, not define you and don't be afraid to take another shot.

Scripture

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?"
— Isaiah 43:18–19 (NLT)

Coaching Challenge

This week, take ten minutes to journal on these three questions:

  • What am I focusing on that is stealing my peace?

  • What lesson have I gained from a difficult season?

  • What is one "another shot" I can take this week, no matter how small?

Small steps often lead to the biggest transformations.
