Serving with Purpose: Small Acts, Lasting Impact
What Does Service Reveal About You?
This Mandela Day, I had the privilege of serving at the Redeeming Love Safe House alongside The Tjommies.
Together, we built vegetable planter boxes, cleared weeds, packed toiletry starter kits and shared a meal. On the surface, they may seem like simple tasks, but they reminded me of something I often explore with my coaching clients:
The smallest actions often reveal the biggest truths about our hearts.
We live in a world that celebrates big achievements, promotions, followers and success.
Yet some of the most meaningful moments in life happen quietly — when no one is applauding and nothing is expected in return.
Service has a way of slowing us down.
It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we can give.
It reminds us that purpose isn't always found in changing the whole world.
Sometimes it's found in changing one person's day.
As I watched people working side by side, laughing while pulling weeds, building with their hands and packing simple necessities with care, I couldn't help but wonder...
When was the last time you gave without expecting anything back?
Not because you had to, not because someone asked, but simply because you could.
Often, when we feel stuck, discouraged or disconnected, our instinct is to look inward.
We search for answers within ourselves, hoping we'll eventually feel better.
However, what if the next step isn't looking inward?
What if it's looking outward?
Sometimes healing begins the moment we become part of someone else's story.
A Coaching Reflection
Take a few quiet moments today and ask yourself:
Where can I make a difference with what I already have?
What gifts, skills or time am I overlooking?
Who in my community could simply use someone to show up?
What is one act of kindness I can do this week without expecting recognition?
Purpose doesn't always begin with a life-changing decision.
Sometimes it begins with saying yes to one opportunity to serve, because every life you touch leaves a mark on your own.
This Week's Coaching Challenge
Choose one intentional act of service this week. It doesn't have to be big.
Call someone who's lonely, help a neighbour, volunteer your time, buy someone a coffee or encourage someone who feels unseen.
Then take a moment to reflect:
How did serving someone else change you?
You may discover that while you set out to bless another person, your own heart was transformed in the process.
"Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth
by our actions." — 1 John 3:18 (NLT)
