Shaped by the Struggle

The Strength in the Resistance

Have you ever stood beside a waterfall and simply listened?

Roaring with power and beauty, the waterfall commands attention. The air vibrates with its thunderous sound. Mist rises into the sunlight while millions of litres of water crash over the rocks below, creating a breathtaking display of strength, movement and wonder.

Yet, have you ever considered what makes a waterfall sound like a waterfall?

It's the rocks.

Without the rocks in its path, the water would simply flow quietly downstream.
There would be no thunderous sound, no dramatic cascade, no breathtaking display of strength and movement. It would be a gentle stream, unnoticed by most who pass by.

The resistance is what creates the beauty. Rocks don't stop the water, but they shape it.
They give it movement, power and purpose.

Perhaps the same is true for us.

So often we question our worth when life feels difficult. We measure our success by the number of obstacles we face, assuming that struggle means we're failing or that resistance means we're on the wrong path.

We look at the challenges, disappointments, setbacks and closed doors and wonder why the journey isn't easier. However, what if the very things you see as obstacles are helping to shape the strength within you? What if the resistance isn't there to stop you but to develop you?

Character is rarely formed in comfort. Courage is rarely discovered when nothing is at risk. Faith rarely grows when everything is predictable and easy.
The struggles we face often reveal strengths we never knew we possessed.

Just as water learns to navigate around rocks, over rocks and through rocks, we learn resilience, perseverance and trust through the challenges that stand in our way.

Resistance is what produces growth, challenges create adventure and obstacles provide opportunities to discover what we are truly capable of.

The waterfall does not become powerful despite the rocks. It becomes powerful because of them.

"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation." – Romans 5:3-4 (NLT)

Paul reminds us that our struggles are not meaningless. They are producing something.
Just as the waterfall's power is revealed through its collision with the rocks, our character is often formed through the challenges we face. Perseverance grows in difficult places. Character is refined through resistance and hope emerges as we witness God's faithfulness carrying us through.

So if you're in a season where the path feels difficult, don't let the obstacles convince you that you are failing. The challenges you are experiencing may be producing something beautiful in you. It may be strengthening your faith, deepening your character and preparing you for what lies ahead.

The rocks in your path are not necessarily evidence that God has abandoned you.
Sometimes they are part of His process. The waterfall keeps flowing and so can you.

Trust that God is working even in the resistance. Trust that He is using every challenge, every setback and every difficult season for a purpose. One day you may look back and realise that the very obstacles you wished away were the things that helped shape the person you were becoming.

The resistance was never the end of the story. It was part of the process that shaped the person God created you to become

Reflection

What "rocks" are currently in your path?

Instead of seeing them as barriers, consider how God may be using them to shape your character, strengthen your faith and prepare you for what lies ahead.

Spend a few moments in prayer today. Invite God to show you where He is working through the resistance and ask Him for the courage to keep moving forward.

The waterfall doesn't stop when it encounters the rocks — it becomes stronger because of them.

Keep flowing. God is not finished with your story.

With you on the journey,
