Grace In a Pigsty
Finding Grace in the Mess
There are seasons in life when the world feels less like a beautiful garden and more like a pigsty. The harder we try to make sense of it, the messier everything seems to become.
Everything feels tangled. Relationships are complicated. People make choices that affect us in ways we never asked for. We find ourselves navigating conflict, disappointment, selfishness, broken systems and situations that seem to grow more tangled the harder we try to fix them.
At times we may wonder:
"When is this complexity going to end?"
"When will things finally become simple again?"
The truth is that life this side of eternity will never be completely free from mess.
People are imperfect. Circumstances are unpredictable. The world is filled with both beauty and brokenness.
Yet, there is something remarkable about God.
Grace does not wait for the mess to disappear before it starts working - it works in the middle of the pigsty.
Think about some of the stories in Scripture. God met people in prisons, deserts, storms, betrayals, failures and moments of deep brokenness. He did not stand at a distance waiting for everything to be cleaned up first. Jesus stepped into the mess and the same is true today.
While we are looking at the complexity around us, God is already at work within it.
While we are focused on what is broken, He is quietly restoring, healing, teaching and transforming.
Grace often does its greatest work in places that seem least likely to produce anything good. That is our hope.
Not that life will always be easy, that people will always make good choices or that every situation will suddenly make sense.
Our hope is that God's grace continues working even when life feels like a pigsty.
Perhaps you have been living in the consequences of someone else's choices.
Maybe you have given more than you received. You have carried burdens that were never yours to carry. You have poured out your time, energy, kindness and resources only to feel exhausted, overlooked and taken advantage of.
Burnout has settled in. Disappointment has left its mark and now you find yourself wondering whether it is worth continuing to do good.
In these moments, it is tempting to become cynical, to close your heart and to stop caring.
It is so easy to assume that kindness only leads to being used, but Scripture encourages us not to grow weary in doing good.
That does not mean continuing without boundaries. It does not mean allowing people to repeatedly misuse your generosity. It does not mean rescuing others from consequences they need to face themselves.
Doing good without wisdom can quickly become enabling. This is where discernment becomes essential.
Discernment gives us the wisdom to know when we are helping rather than rescuing, showing compassion rather than becoming codependent and extending grace without enabling unhealthy patterns.
God never asks us to become entangled in every mess around us. Sometimes the wisest thing we can do is step back, seek His guidance and allow others to take responsibility for their own choices.
Not every problem belongs to us, not every burden is ours to carry and not every pigsty is ours to clean.
If you find yourself standing in the middle of a pigsty season, ask God for wisdom.
Ask Him to show you what belongs to you and what does not.
Trust Him to show you where grace is working, even when you cannot yet see the results.
Allow Him to restore what has been lost.
The prophet Joel speaks of God restoring "the years the locusts have eaten".
What seemed wasted, stolen or destroyed was not beyond His ability to redeem.
The same is true for you.
The energy that was drained, the opportunities that were lost, the confidence that was shaken and the peace that was stolen...
None of it is beyond God's restoring power.
The pigsty may still be messy today, the complexity may not disappear tomorrow, but grace is still working quietly, patiently and faithfully.
While the mess may seem overwhelming, God's grace has never been intimidated by brokenness.
Keep seeking His wisdom, keep walking in discernment and keep trusting His restoration, because even in the pigsty, grace is still at work.
With you on the journey,
