Faith & Love in Action
Street Ministry at Lewende Woord Bloemfontein
In a world where it’s easy to become consumed by our own
lives, there are still places where compassion meets action - where faith is
not only spoken, but lived. One such place is Lewende Woord Bloemfontein, where
street ministry is more than an outreach - it’s a calling.
Answering the Call
Street ministry begins with a simple yet powerful decision:
to show up.
At Lewende Woord Bloemfontein, individuals come together with a
shared purpose - to serve, uplift and bring hope to those who often feel
unseen.
This is something I had the privilege of stepping into
myself. Joining the outreach, I quickly realised it’s not about having all the
answers. It’s about being present. Whether it’s a warm meal, a kind word or a
prayer, every small act becomes a reminder that no one is forgotten.
As a life coach, I found that this space allowed me to use
my experience in a deeply meaningful way - not in a formal setting, but in
real, human moments. Sometimes it is simply listening. Sometimes it is asking
the right questions and sometimes it is gently helping someone see that their
story isn’t over.
More Than Just Giving
What makes this ministry so impactful is that it goes beyond
material support. Yes, food is shared. Yes, clothes are given, but something
deeper happens in those moments on the street - genuine human connection.
Being part of it opened my eyes in a way I didn’t expect.
People are listened to. Stories are heard. Hearts are met with compassion
rather than judgement and in those moments, I found myself not only giving, but receiving perspective, humility and gratitude.
Through my coaching background, I become even more aware of
the power of fully showing up for someone. Not trying to fix, not trying to rush - just
holding space for someone to be seen and heard.
Street ministry reminds us that dignity is just as important
as provision.
Building Trust, One Encounter at a Time
Real change doesn’t happen overnight. The teams at Lewende
Woord understand that consistency matters. Returning week after week, they
build trust within the community - relationships that are rooted in sincerity
and care.
Witnessing this firsthand made a deep impact on me. It
showed me that true service isn’t about once-off moments, but about showing up
again and again, even when it’s not convenient.
It also reinforced something I’ve learned in coaching - that
trust is built in the small, consistent moments, where people feel safe enough
to open up and be themselves.
A Space for Everyone to Serve
One of the most beautiful aspects of street ministry is that
anyone can be part of it.
You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to have
a title. You just need a willing heart.
I came in simply wanting to help, but left with so much
more. The experience humbled me deeply and then somehow made me even more
aware of how much I have to be grateful for.
It also reminded me that purpose doesn’t always look like a
structured session or a defined role. Sometimes, it looks like standing on a
street corner, having a real conversation and being available in the moment.
From preparing food to simply walking alongside someone and
listening, every role matters.
Faith That Moves Beyond the Church Walls
Street ministry is a powerful reminder that the church is
not confined to a building.
It lives in the hands and hearts of those willing
to step outside and meet people where they are.
At Lewende Woord Bloemfontein, faith becomes visible - in
action, in kindness and in love. Being part of that expression of faith
changed something in me. It softened my heart and grounded me in a deeper sense
of purpose.
It also gave me a new perspective on my work as a life coach - showing me that impact isn’t always about structure or strategy, but about
connection, compassion and meeting people exactly where they are in real, unfiltered moments.
Why It Matters
In a city like Bloemfontein, where many face daily
struggles, initiatives like this bring light into difficult spaces.
Street ministry is not about fixing everything. It’s about
showing up anyway.
For me, it became more than just an act of service - it
became a moment of reflection.
A reminder of how blessed I am and how
important it is to never take that for granted.
A Moment That Changed Me
Today, I stepped more deeply into this calling by joining the outreach ministry, Redeeming Love. I spent time with a group of girls - each carrying their own heartbreaking story of how they found themselves battling drug addiction and in some cases, the painful realities of what they have to do just to survive.
Sitting with them, listening to them and simply being present was deeply humbling.
It made me realise something I won’t easily forget: one wrong decision, one difficult season and it could have been me. Titles, careers and status don’t place us above anyone.
At the end of the day, we are all human - each of us in need of grace.
In that space, something beautiful happened. We made bracelets together using coloured beads, each one telling a story of redemption and hope:
Black – My heart is black with sin... until Jesus Christ came in
Red – His precious blood I know
White – Has washed me white as snow
Green – And in grace I grow
Blue – To heaven I shall go
Yellow – For in God's word I'm told, I'll walk on streets of gold
What seemed like a simple activity became something so much more. It became a reminder that every life holds a story and that no story is beyond redemption.
Afterwards, we shared testimonies and spent time together over cooldrink and sandwiches.
It wasn’t extravagant, but it didn’t need to be. It was real. It was meaningful. It was connection.
As a life coach, this experience stirred something deeper in me. It challenged me to reflect on how I can use what I’ve been given - not just to build a career, but to serve a greater purpose. To meet people where they are, without judgement and to walk alongside them with compassion and hope.
Today wasn’t just outreach.
It was perspective.
It was humility.
It was a reminder of grace.
Final Thoughts
Street ministry changes lives - not only for those being
served, but also for those who serve. It shifts perspectives, deepens
compassion and strengthens faith.
For me personally, it was a humbling experience - one that
made me more grateful, more aware and more intentional about how I show up in
the world.
It also reaffirmed why I do what I do. Being able to use my
life coaching experience in such a raw and real environment reminded me that
sometimes the most powerful impact comes from simply being present, listening
deeply and speaking life where it’s needed most.
At its core, it is a simple but profound message:
Love people where they are!
If this touched your heart, don’t let it end here.
Consider getting involved - whether through street ministry, supporting initiatives like Redeeming Love or simply showing up for someone in your own community.
You don’t need to have all the answers - you just need a willing heart.
With you on the journey,
– Storm Reagan
